Giving Up Beer: A Mother’s Journey
9 months ago, I was just like any other beer nerd. I went to beer bars, getting overly excited when something special was on tap. I planned out my strategies at beer festivals. I wrote tasting notes. I bonded with friends over amazing beers.
Beer was a hobby of mine, something I knew a lot about and enjoyed greatly. For the past 8 months, beer has been something I cannot indulge in. Of course, I am happy to give up beer for the baby I will hold in less than 2 months, but I miss it, I really do. I miss feeling connected to the culture and writing about my experiences on bb.com. Can’t wait to get back at it!
I think about the next chapter in my life, it wont be the same. I wont be spending all day on a sunny Saturday slinging back IPAs and stouts. Instead, I look forward to the time when I can go out with my new family, enjoy a beer, get reacquainted with the flavors, take some notes and relax (as much as you can with an infant).
Pregnant women make many sacrifices. I could go on for several lines- I will spare you. All I know is that the first real beer I have, is going to be a good one.
If you couldn’t have a beer for 9 months, what would your first beer be?
I want mine to be something special, an imperial stout or a sour. Something barrel aged and innovative. This occasion not only celebrates the arrival of my new love, but the re-emergence of an old passion.
So, don’t take your beer for granted. There are thirsty mothers-to-be out there. Cheers!

I can’t remember exactly what it was, but we had a large bottle of something Belgian in the delivery room. It was a long wait!
Large is good. So is Belgian.
I look back fondly on all the cold ones we have shared, and am honored to have called you a friend since your Kokanee days! I look forward to sharing many more (Kokanees and otherwise) in Seattle, Chicago, and wherever else our lives take us. I love you Jess! You are an inspiration!
Thanks For Whom the Beer Toales! My pallette will be so clean and ready for tasting!
Thanks Kim! All those years of building my tolerance…gone.
We will have to grab a cold one together.
Great post. I gave up beer for a year or more due to illness a few years ago. It was hard. Really hard. And once I started sipping again, boy did I get loopy fast! All I know is, whatever you enjoy, you WILL enjoy it.
Can’t wait to enjoy a beer with you and the little guy.
